Taos, N.M. —August is shaping up as an important jazz month at The Harwood Museum of Art.  In collaboration with the Friends of Santa Fe Jazz, the Harwood presents a Jazz Appreciation Class with Gary Yamane, Fridays, Aug. 3 through Aug. 24, 1-3 p.m. and a special evening with international jazz ambassador Lisa Henry, Saturday, August 25, 7 p.m.

The Harwood Museum of Art is pleased to present a 4-part class with Gary Yamane on the overview of jazz history, theory and techniques.  Yamane will use a variety of audio/visual media and live demonstration to facilitate a deeper understanding of jazz music.

Gary Yamane is a composer and performer who lives in Taos. His interest in music spans all genres and he plays everything from the saxophone, flute, Native American flutes, keyboards, guitar, bass, and percussion.

Originally from Oakland, CA, Yamane has been a student of the creative process for close to five decades ever since he picked up the saxophone at age 8. He has studied music extensively with Rudy Tapiro, Gary Gray, John Handy and Joe Viola. He has attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Berklee College of Music, Boston, and San Francisco State University where he graduated with a B.A. degree in Creative Arts. He has performed throughout the San Francisco Bay Area as well as the East Coast and Southwest. His music, though structured and deeply harmonic, is highly improvisational and spontaneous in nature.

He has composed for multimedia projects by international high tech companies and local non-profit organizations. He has performed throughout the United States and has toured the Southwest playing Native American flutes for a theatre company. He currently teaches contemporary music at Moreno Valley Charter High School and performs locally.

Day 1 Friday, August 3, 1-3 p.m. Roots of Jazz
Recordings: Blues, Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, Sidney Bechet and Jelly Roll Morton.
Demonstration: Blues progression, call and response, influence of blues on different genres of music, use of chords, chord progressions and chordal instruments.

Day 2 Friday, August 10, 1-3 p.m. Swing/Big Band
Recordings: Various big bands, New Orleans sound and small group swing bands
Demonstration: Drums and discussion of the history of drum kit.

Day 3 Friday, August 17, 1-3 p.m. Bebop/Post Bebop/Latin/Modal/Avant Garde
Recordings: Charlie Parker/Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holliday and Alice Coltrane.
Demonstration: Chord extensions, chord progressions, saxophone lines

Day 4 Friday, August 24, 1-3 p.m.  Fusion/Smooth/World/Acid/Latin
Recordings: Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, John Mclaughlin and Pat Metheny
Demonstration: Role of electric guitar and bass

COST: $100 Harwood Museum Alliance Members; $120 non-members. Class admission cost includes a ticket to the Lisa Henry jazz concert.

LISA HENRY AT THE HARWOOD MUSEUM OF ART
Saturday, August 25, 7 p.m.

Lisa Henry is a dynamic vocalist.  She began singing gospel music in the Baptist church and by age 12 was singing the music of Billie Holiday and Miles Davis. She was winner of the 1994 Thelonius Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition and was later named an International Jazz Ambassador to Africa. She has toured Chile, Argentina and Peru with the Institute in 1998.  In 2006 she participated in a U.S. State Department-sponsored tour of India and in 2007 she performed for an acclaimed presidential dinner at the White House celebrating the Institute’s 20th Anniversary. Russia, India, and numerous of the countries of Africa have also enjoyed her vocal artistry.
 
“Concertgoers will enjoy the diverse variety of jazz styles that Henry will perform from Gershwin and the Great American Songbook to jazz standards,” says Susan Longhenry, Director, The Harwood Museum of Art. “We feel very fortunate to be able to bring her to the Harwood Museum of Art. We anticipate a full house welcoming her to Taos and encourage music lovers to get their tickets soon.”

Her credits include eight CDs, worldwide performances and collaborations with artists including Kenny Baron, Gerald Clayton, Robin Eubanks, Kenny Garrett, Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, Antonio Hart, Ingrid Jensen, Kevin Mahogany, TS Monk, Lou Rawls, Wayne Shorter, Clark Terry and Bobby Watson. She has been featured at the Telluride, Wolftrap, Kansas City and numerous other jazz festivals. She has eight CDs to her credit, the latest (2005) “Live from 18th and Vine” has received critical acclaim.

Lisa will be accompanied by the John Rangel Trio. Pianist and composer John Rangel is an award-winning producer and performer. A native New Yorker, he moved to Santa Fe several years ago. He has been a professional musician for more than 20 years. His versatility as a jazz pianist is most evident in his work with Nat Adderly, Marcus Printup,
Ira Sullivan, Bobby Shew, Sam Rivers, Ravi Coltrane and many more.
